What server colocation actually is, and when it makes more sense than renting a dedicated server

Colocation is a fundamentally different model from dedicated server hosting — the distinction matters and is worth stating clearly. With a dedicated server, you're renting hardware that HostGraber owns: you pay for the machine, HostGraber provides the server and puts it in the data center. With colocation, you own the physical hardware yourself and pay HostGraber for rack space, power, cooling, network connectivity, and physical security to house it. The server is yours — you can see it, touch it, upgrade it, and take it away if you ever leave. What you're buying is a secure, connected home for hardware you already own or plan to purchase.

The case for colocation over dedicated hosting comes down primarily to control and total cost over time. Hardware you buy outright eventually pays for itself — a server that costs ₹5–10 lakh to purchase may cost significantly less over three to five years than paying monthly rent on equivalent dedicated hardware. Organizations that have specific hardware requirements (custom CPU configurations, proprietary storage arrays, specialized networking cards, hardware security modules) that aren't available in any hosted dedicated server catalog also turn to colocation. And businesses with strict data sovereignty requirements — where regulatory, legal, or corporate policy demands physical control over the hardware at all times — use colocation because the server is their asset and can only be accessed with their authorization.

Tier sizing is by rack unit (U) — 1U for a single 1U rackmount server, 2U for a larger chassis, through Half Rack (21U) and Full Rack (42U) for organizations housing multiple servers or blade enclosures. Power allocation scales from 450W at 1U through 15kW at Full Rack.
