Choosing The Right Certificate

What the different SSL certificate types actually mean, and which one your site needs

Every SSL certificate does the same core thing: it encrypts the connection between a visitor's browser and your server, which is what turns HTTP into HTTPS and shows the padlock icon in the browser bar. What differs between certificate types is the level of identity verification that happened before the certificate was issued, and how many domains or subdomains the certificate covers.

A Domain Validation (DV) certificate — like Positive SSL here — is the most common type. It only verifies that you control the domain, which is why it can be issued in minutes. The encryption is identical to more expensive certificates; what's different is that no one verified your business identity, only that you own the domain. For most websites — blogs, portfolios, small business sites, landing pages — DV is entirely sufficient. The Comodo SSL option here is also DV, issued by a more widely recognized CA (certificate authority), which can help with browser trust displays on some older systems.

A Wildcard SSL covers one domain and all its subdomains with a single certificate — so shop.yourdomain.com, blog.yourdomain.com, app.yourdomain.com, and any others are all covered without buying a separate certificate for each. This makes sense for any site using multiple subdomains for different functions, and is far cheaper than buying individual DV certificates per subdomain at scale.

An Extended Validation (EV) certificate requires the CA to verify your business's legal existence — company registration, physical address, and phone number are checked against official databases before issuance, which is why it takes days rather than minutes. EV certificates used to display a green address bar with the company name visible in older browsers, though most modern browsers have removed this visual distinction. EV is still chosen by banks, financial institutions, large e-commerce platforms, and organizations where proving the company's verified legal identity is important — both for regulatory reasons and because the $1,750,000 warranty (vs. $10,000 for DV) offers a meaningful level of assurance.

All four certificates here use the same 256-bit encryption strength — the encryption level is not what differs between tiers. What differs is validation depth, subdomain coverage, and warranty amount.
