When RAM Is The Bottleneck

What Memory Optimized VPS means, and when high RAM matters more than CPU cores

Memory Optimized VPS plans allocate a high ratio of RAM relative to CPU — MemoryX gives you 16GB RAM on just 4 vCPU cores, while a General Purpose plan at a similar price gives you far less RAM per core. This skew is deliberate: it means large datasets, indexes, or in-memory structures can be held in RAM without constant disk reads, which is the primary performance bottleneck for memory-bound workloads.

The workloads that benefit most from this ratio are those that need to hold large amounts of data in memory at once rather than process many concurrent tasks. MySQL and PostgreSQL database servers running large tables with heavy JOIN queries benefit enormously when the working dataset fits in the buffer pool rather than spilling to disk — a query that takes seconds when reading from disk can run in milliseconds when the data is already in RAM. Redis and Memcached caching layers by definition live in memory. ERP systems, business intelligence dashboards, and in-memory analytics tools that aggregate across large datasets at query time all fall into this category.

The four tiers here scale primarily by RAM — from 16GB (MemoryX) up through 96GB (UltraRAM) — with CPU cores stepping up at MemCore (8 vCPU) once the workload is large enough that processing speed also matters alongside memory capacity. RAMBoost at 32GB is where most mid-size MySQL or PostgreSQL production databases realistically sit; MemCore and UltraRAM at 64–96GB are for large-scale in-memory analytics, multi-tenant databases, or JVM-based applications (Elasticsearch, Kafka, Cassandra) that need substantial heap allocation.
