Which domain extension should you register, and does it actually matter?

A domain name has two parts: the name itself (like "hostgraber") and the extension (like ".com" or ".in"). The extension doesn't affect how a website works technically — a .in site loads just as fast as a .com site from the same server, and search engines don't systematically rank one extension higher than another for most queries. What the extension does affect is perception, and for country-specific extensions like .in, it can also signal geographic targeting to search engines when used together with other signals.

For most Indian businesses and individuals, the practical choice is between .com and .in (or its variants like .co.in and .net.in). A .com domain is universally recognized, works well internationally, and is the default expectation for visitors who type a domain from memory — if you expect to have customers outside India or want your brand to feel global, .com is almost always the stronger choice. A .in or .co.in domain signals India-based activity explicitly, which can be useful for businesses whose customers are entirely Indian and who want that geographic signal built into the domain itself.

New extensions like .tech, .store, .io, and .online work well when the matching .com isn't available and the extension is thematically relevant — a .store domain for an e-commerce brand reads as intentional rather than like a fallback, for example. They generally cost more than .com or .in, and some audiences (particularly older or less tech-familiar ones) may be less comfortable with less familiar extensions. For developer tools, SaaS products, and tech-adjacent brands, .io has become a widely accepted shorthand in the industry.

The simplest rule: if the .com of your brand name is available and affordable, register it — even if you use another extension as your primary domain, owning the .com prevents someone else from taking it and redirecting confused visitors elsewhere. For Indian-specific businesses, pairing a .in with a .com registration is a common and reasonable approach.
