Nobody thinks about electricity when they hit "publish" on a website. But every page load, every email, every AI query behind the scenes routes through a physical server somewhere, and that server is drawing real power from a real grid.
The EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive took effect in January 2025, requiring large businesses to disclose detailed ESG metrics. California's SB 253 mandates emissions reporting starting in 2026 for companies over a billion dollars in revenue, and Europe's Energy Efficiency Directive now requires data centers using more than 2,780 MWh a year to publicly report their energy performance. Some regions with dense data center clusters, like Northern Virginia, have even floated local moratoriums on new energy-intensive facilities because the grid can't keep up.
None of this affects a small business buying a shared hosting plan directly, but it shapes the infrastructure underneath everything — and it's part of why more hosting companies are now competing on efficiency and renewable sourcing, not just price and uptime.
This is where it gets murky — "green hosting" isn't one standardized thing. It covers a few genuinely different approaches, and they're not equally meaningful.
Provider buys certificates equal to their energy use. Funds renewable production elsewhere, doesn't mean their servers run on it directly.
Total emissions calculated, then compensated via projects like reforestation. A financial offset, not a change in power sourcing.
Infrastructure runs directly on solar, wind, or hydro contracts. Generally the strongest version of a sustainability claim.
Better cooling and hardware lower Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) — reduces the actual footprint rather than compensating for it.
