When Capacity Is The Constraint

What Storage Optimized VPS means, and when raw NVMe capacity matters more than CPU or RAM

Storage Optimized VPS plans allocate significantly more NVMe SSD capacity relative to CPU and RAM than any other tier — StorageX gives you 300GB NVMe on just 4 vCPU cores and 8GB RAM, a ratio that would be wasteful for a compute-heavy workload but is exactly right when the primary constraint is how much data can be stored and served efficiently. This is a fundamentally different bottleneck from CPU or memory pressure, and it's the one constraint that no amount of extra cores or RAM solves.

The workloads that belong on Storage Optimized rather than General Purpose come down to data volume. Backup repositories for production systems — hosting daily or weekly snapshots of databases, application data, or VM images — need large, fast, reliable storage above all else. Media hosting and streaming origin servers that serve large video or audio files need capacity first and CPU second (transcoding happens at upload time, not serve time). File archive servers, object storage backends, and log aggregation systems (large Elasticsearch clusters storing time-series log data) are classic storage-first use cases. A WordPress site with 50GB of database and assets doesn't belong here — a media company storing 500GB of video files does.

The four tiers scale primarily by NVMe capacity — 300GB through 800GB — with CPU and RAM stepping up proportionally so the processor can keep up with concurrent data transfer operations at higher storage sizes. DiskPro at 500GB is the practical sweet spot for most file-heavy applications; StorageMax and DataCore at 700–800GB are for distributed storage setups, SaaS platforms with large per-user file storage, or video hosting with a growing media library.

All plans use NVMe SSD — not SATA SSD or HDD — which matters for storage-heavy workloads since random I/O performance (relevant for database storage and concurrent file access) on NVMe is orders of magnitude faster than spinning disk.
